“Ghost Nets” are fishing nets that have been left or lost in the ocean by fishermen. These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea.
This is what I came across on my dives yesterday. The photos cannot convey to you the scale of this net. It covered hundreds of m² of reef. We spent three dives cutting it up, cutting out fish, untangling coral and picking out the crown-of-thorns starfish that had been taking advantage of this easy access to coral poking out through the net, and we probably got through 1/3 of it.
It was depressing sight, especially seeing the scars on the reef where the attempts to pull the net free had snapped huge colonies of Acrapora sp. which lay in a tangled heap, covered in algae.
It never fails to shock me, the atrocities we commit to our oceans to try and quell a never-ending hunger.
